The First Library Haul of the Year

After getting three hours of sleep and waking up at 2:17 A.M, I decided to treat myself after work to drive out to my favorite library. It’s a tiny library and it’s one that I’m planning to visit a lot more frequently in the new year. Unlike the other times I go to the library, I really held myself back and checked out a realistic amount of books that I can read before they’re due.

Here are the three books that I picked out from my first library trip of the year!

How to Mars by David Ebenbach

goodreads summary

I have a real itch to read some space centered science fiction so when I found this book, I knew I had to pick it up. I didn’t even check goodreads for reviews on this book. I was immediately drawn in by the quirky and fun vibes that the cover radiates. From what I got from reading the back, this book feels like a mix between a technical science fiction like “The Martian” and a new trashy reality tv show. It’s a combination I didn’t know existed but now that I know it’s a thing, I must try it out. This follows six scientists who are selected by a corporation to travel to Mars. With the way space travel is happening now a days, I have a feeling that this book won’t feel as far fetched as it probably should. It also feels like it’s going to be a fun weekend read and isn’t too long to read in one or two sittings for me.

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske

goodreads summary

I know it’s shocking but for the first time in a while, I’m actually not wanting to pick up a romance book. I think I’ve read so many contemporary romance books that I oversaturated myself with the genre and need a break. That and the fact that the last few romances I’ve read have been let downs probably added to my romance reading slump. This book seems like the potential cure for my romance slumped out heart. The fantasy setting and the victorian era design on the cover has me excited to read it. T.J Klune also blurbed this book as “Sublime prose. Top notch world building”. I still haven’t read his works yet but I know that I’m going to love his books so it made me excited to pick this up. I guess this book ended up in my checked out list because of a recommendation form an author I haven’t read yet but know I’ll probably love.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

goodreads summary

I was always nervous to pick up this book, even before the world shut down from a global pandemic. This book caught wind and grew in terms of popularity when I wasn’t ready for picking it up. Now, years later, I finally decided that I’m ready for it, ironically when I’m living through a pandemic of my own. What a mix of fiction and real life huh? This is also going to be my first pandemic book that I will read after the start of our pandemic. I wish I did read it before the pandemic because I think that it would have been cool to see how I felt about the themes explored in the book before and after such a similar global event this book explores. From what I’ve heard, this book means a lot to people and I know what it means and feels like to form a connection with a book so I’m both equally excited and nervous to dive into it and see how it changes me, both as a reader and a human living through my own world crisis.
