Ordinary Monsters by J.M Miro
release date: June 7th, 2022
“A stunning new work of historical fantasy, J. M. Miro’s Ordinary Monsters introduces readers to the dark, labyrinthe world of The Talents.“
England, 1882. In Victorian London, two children with mysterious powers are hunted by a figure of darkness —a man made of smoke.
Sixteen-year-old Charlie Ovid, despite a lifetime of brutality, doesn’t have a scar on him. His body heals itself, whether he wants it to or not. Marlowe, a foundling from a railway freight car, shines with a strange bluish light. He can melt or mend flesh. When two grizzled detectives are recruited to escort them north to safety, they are forced to confront the nature of difference, and belonging, and the shadowy edges of the monstrous.
This book is a very chunky book. It’s huge and from the plot of the book, I have a feeling the story is going to be as expansive and captivating as the size and cover of this new release. I’m also really excited that this is going to be the first of a trilogy. I’m a huge fan of historical settings and this one in particular just calls to me because not only does the story have a historical fiction tone to it, but it’s also a fantasy book. I have a feeling that this book is going to have a found family trope and I’m so excited for it.
Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen
release date: June 7th, 2022
“For fans of Hustlers and How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia, the story of two Asian American women who band together to grow a counterfeit handbag scheme into a global enterprise–an incisive and glittering blend of fashion, crime, and friendship from the author of Bury What We Cannot Take and Soy Sauce for Beginners.“
Money can’t buy happiness… but it can buy a decent fake.
Ava Wong has always played it safe. As a strait-laced, rule-abiding Chinese American lawyer with a successful surgeon as a husband, a young son, and a beautiful home–she’s built the perfect life. But beneath this façade, Ava’s world is crumbling: her marriage is falling apart, her expensive law degree hasn’t been used in years, and her toddler’s tantrums are pushing her to the breaking point.
A lawyer with a seemingly perfect life gets roped into a counterfeit scheme with an old friend. Wow, wow, wow. This seems like it’s going to be an absolutely fun ride. I’m really loving the recent fiction releases that involve women getting wrapped into not so moral schemes such as heists, thefts, and crimes.
Flying Solo by Linda Holmes
release date: June 14th, 2022
“A woman returns to her small Maine hometown, uncovering family secrets that take her on a journey of self-discovery and new love, in this warm and charming novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Evvie Drake Starts Over.”
Smarting from her recently cancelled wedding and about to turn forty, Laurie Sassalyn returns to her Maine hometown of Calcasset to handle the estate of her great-aunt Dot, a spirited adventurer who lived to be ninety. Along with boxes of Polaroids and pottery, a mysterious wooden duck shows up at the bottom of a cedar chest. Laurie’s curiosity is piqued, especially after she finds a love letter to the never-married Dot that ends with the line, “And anyway, if you’re ever desperate, there are always ducks, darling.”
I absolutely loved this author’s previous novel, “Evvie Drake Starts Over”. I’ve reread it twice and I would go as far as it calling it a comfort read. It was a short easy read that had a slow burn kick to it. It wasn’t a super high stakes book and it did feature a romance but it was slow in the way it built up. It wasn’t very high stakes compared to other romances or contemporary fiction I’ve read. I also have a pretty bad memory so I want to reread this sometime this year but when I heard that the author’s new release “Flying Solo” is super low stakes I got excited. I don’t know about you but my life’s been pretty chaotic the past month or two and I honestly want a break. I feel like a grandma but the thought of all the cool people traveling around, going to summer parties, and living up their life stresses me out! I just want to place myself near a body of water like a pond, lake, river, or honestly a puddle will do, and just read and lose myself into something that won’t give me anxiety or heart palpitations. From early reviews, I heard that this book has a mystery element to it, thrifting, a romance, and that it’s centered around a woman who either didn’t go through with her wedding or got dumped, not sure which.
Hurricane Girl by Marcy Dermansky
release date: June 14th, 2022
“A propulsive and daring new novel by the author of Very Nice about a woman on the run from catastrophe, searching for love, home, a swimming pool, and for someone who can perhaps stop the bleeding from her head.”
Allison Brody is thirty-two and newly arrived on the East Coast after just managing to flee her movie producer boyfriend. She has some money, saved up from years of writing and waitressing, and so she spends it, buying a small house on the beach. But then a Category 3 hurricane makes landfall and scatters her home up and down the shore, leaving Allison adrift.
Where I live, there are no actual seasons like winter, summer, fall, or spring. We have different kind of seasons here in Florida: the humid months, the less humid months, the months where love bugs are loving real hard, and of course, Hurricane Season. When I heard about the title of this book, I got super excited. I honestly don’t know how to describe this book because I’m still reeling from trying to process reading the goodreads summary. All I can say is that it seems like it’s going to be a RIDE. Also, the cover is just gorgeous.
The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston
release date: June 28th, 2022
“A disillusioned millennial ghostwriter who, quite literally, has some ghosts of her own, has to find her way back home in this sparkling adult debut from national bestselling author Ashley Poston.”
Florence Day is the ghostwriter for one of the most prolific romance authors in the industry, and she has a problem—after a terrible breakup, she no longer believes in love. It’s as good as dead.
When her new editor, a too-handsome mountain of a man, won’t give her an extension on her book deadline, Florence prepares to kiss her career goodbye. But then she gets a phone call she never wanted to receive, and she must return home for the first time in a decade to help her family bury her beloved father.
My gosh, I absolutely cannot wait for this book. I have a feeling that this is going to be a book I’m going to read in one sitting. I don’t think I can coherently explain the master piece this book sounds to be but honestly, hats off to the author for writing a book with this plot. This book follows a ghost writer who suddenly gets visited by a ghost who happens to be her new editor. I’m sorry WHAT? June 28th can’t get here any faster.
