September 12th to September 18th: Hobbits, Good Hair Days, and a Book with Lemons On It
It’s been a long time since I’ve sat down and typed up a weekly wrap up. A month long hiatus and a couple of busy weeks that followed never really gave me a chance to take a breath and reflect on the week prior. This weekly wrap up has been inspired by the fact that a few days ago, I literally dusted off my journal and sat down with a pen and paper and started to reflect on the months that have passed and some of the things that have been troubling me.
Things are still pretty busy but with the start of Autumn, I’m hoping to find a new routine and kickstart a fresh new wave of love for life and progress. Anyone else feel like they’re coming out of a rut as they enter into the new season? I’m also silently (okay, not so silently) panicking that we’re reaching the end of the year. How did that happen?!
Anyway, there’s a ton to catch up on but I thought that today, we’d go ahead and start with the past seven days.
Here are some highs from the past few days:
- I’ve kept my place clean almost the entire week, particularly through the work week. It’s made things os much better and I honestly feel physically lighter. They say tidy place, tiny mind and I can definitely give that old saying my stamp of approval.
- I’m recognizing how much mental health and well being gets affected by external sources. I often feel like I’m a walking sponge. If someone’s upset around me or in my life, I become upset. If someone becomes stressed, I become stressed. This week, I sat down and journaled out how often I do this and that I need to be more aware of this. I have this as a weekly high because recognizing a problem is the first step in fixing the problem.
- I stared watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy and it’s been like reading a book on the screen.
- I’ve had a really good hair week this week and it’s sadly not a frequent occurrence due to the humidity of where I live.
What I Read
Title by Author This Vicious Grace by Emily Thiede
I love the originality of this story. It’s not something I’v read before. This is also my first foray back into YA fantasy so that was a bit of an adjustment for me. I won’t go into much detail on this because I’m working on a review for so to keep it general, it was a decent read. There were some elements of the world building that confused me but I think it’s a me problem because it’s pretty highly rated on goodreads. I don’t know if I’m the target audience for this but I’m going to sit with my thoughts a bit more before I write a full fledged review for this. I enjoyed the characters, the banter especially, and the setting but the world building and magic system had me a bit confused.
What I Watched
The Anthrax Attacks
This was such a cool documentary. I loved how we got to see Phil Coulson, sorry Clark Gregg, play one of the suspects. I’m not going to lie, most of my knowledge on the Anthrax attacks is limited to what I learned on Criminal minds. Day time television is never the way to go for understanding the facts and brevity of events such as this. In this documentary, I learned a lot about how close to 9/11 the Anthrax attacks were and how close they touched working government workers. More importantly, I learned the biggest population of victims in these attacks, the post office workers. It’s insanely disgusting the complete lack of regard and care the government and business owners had towards their employees, the people who truly do the work that reap them riches and fame. I wish the documentary spent more time on the post office workers and the media involvement in the failure of protecting them from the attacks. I also wished we got more stats or something that showed how many post office workers were truly affected by the Anthrax attacks.
Twilight
Yeah, you read that right, I rewatched Twilight. Listen, it’s raining outside and it’s been lighting and thundering a ton. The nights have been coming on earlier and the mornings later. That in Florida language reads “autumn time”. Which means, it’s time for a yearly rewatch of Twilight and I can pretend I’m in the Pacific Northwest where there’s a ton on of pine trees around me and other big bushy trees that change colors with the seasons, not just palm trees. As a woman in my mid 20’s, it’s absolutely alarming to hear some of the things that come out of the mouths of these characters. Also how horrid the direction for the first movie was. There was so much potential for this movie to be filmed with the levity and depth my middle school brain imagined the book to contain.
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
I’ve watched parts of these movies on cable tv when Iw as younger but I never truly watched any of the ”Lord of the Rings” movies. I don’t know why but since it was fall, I wanted to pop on a fantasy movie and came across this one on a streaming service. This was such a nice movie and also so very long. It took me two working days to finish this movie because sleep and productivity needed to happen. It’s honestly like watching a book on a screen. The amount of depth and story this movie explores is so beautifully detailed. Also, it’s crazy to me that this movie came out in 2001. The graphics weren’t even that bad! It’s truly a high quality movie that has withstood the test of time.
