The time has come to bid ado to June. June’s been gone for a week now officially and the thought of that makes me sick. I say this every wrap up but where is the time going?! Last month’s been the worst month when it comes to reading. I’ve only read two books, both of which are YA contemporary, and that to in the first week of June. So it felt like I didn’t read for the entire month.
“Field Notes on Love” by Jennifer E. Smith is a quick YA romance about two strangers who end up going on a trip on a train and falling in love. I knew this was going to be an insta love story but the insta love started a lot earlier in the book than I expected. And the way it happened was also kind of unbelievable but alas, it was a sweet, quick read and it did it’s job. It was entertaining but nothing mind blowing.
“Little and Lion” by Brandy Colbert had a lot of representation in terms of LGBTQIA+, mental health, BIPOC characters, and a non-nuclear family relationship. This book is centered around a sibling relationship that’s nicely done. I learned a lot about what it means to be bipolar and after talking it with some people, the consensus is that it seems pretty accurate. I didn’t like this one character in the book though. I found their role to be a bit annoying and frustrating.
If there’s a theme to the music I listened to this month, it would be THROWBACK. I rediscovered my love for Black Eyed Peas after listening to their recent album, which I also love. I also rediscovered Colbie Caillat. I used to listen her songs, “Brighter than the Sun” and “I Do” a lot when I was younger. They’re just nice happy songs to listen to in the morning to get you going. My Trini music of the month was the song “Differentology” by Bunji Garlin. It’s got a nice lit beat that’s perfect for walking in the 106 degree Summer day.
I also listened to a lot of scores this month. They’re nice to have on in the background when you’re trying to get into the groove of work. “The Man from UNCLE”, one of my all time favorite movies, has a really nice score full of action music. Just listening to it makes me want to rewatch the movie. I also have to include some Bollywood here. I’ve been really enjoy the song “War Theme” from the movie “War”, another favorite movie. Looking back now, it seems that I enjoy action movie scores.
As for July, my reading goals is to well… just READ. I really miss the routine of reading and I’m hoping to jump into a book that will suck me in. I am doing a buddy read of Pride and Prejudice so I’m hoping to finish at least that one book this month lol.
How did your June reading go? What were some of your favorites?
