Take Two: Giving Books a Second Chance

Daisy Jones and the Six

goodreads summary

I read this book hours after I finished “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” and it just didn’t hit the same. I was also expecting a ton from it because it was so hyped when it came out. This book has a cult like following and I’m not going to lie, I spent the majority of the years after its release making it my personality to be like “Daisy Jones is overhyped”. With the show coming out, I definitely want to give this book another go because reason number one, I have FOMO, and reason number two, my reading tastes have drastically changed since my first read of it. Contemporary fiction wasn’t really my thing back when I first read this and while this book is “technically” historical fiction since it follows the story of a band in the 70’s, it’s centered around themes largely explored in contemporary fiction. I wasn’t really open minded in the topics I was reading back then. Rock and roll bands, music, and the 70’s didn’t fall in my bucket of interests back then, nor do they now to be honest, but character studies, unlikeable characters, and stories spread across generations do.

Shadow and Bone Series

goodreads summary

I’ve quickly outgrown YA as a genre, but especially YA fantasy. It’s more probably for me to pick up a YA contemporary fiction book than a YA fantasy book. That being said, I haven’t read a YA contemporary fiction in years. I’ve started to read more middle grade books but YA just doesn’t mesh well with me. I read the first book in this series a long time ago and even then recognized how trope filled this book is. Personally, I don’t find it offensive for a book to be filled with a ton of tropes because books got to have tropes people. It’s just that I didn’t really care for the main characters so I was hoping that the tropes/themes explored in the first book would add more tension to the plot and they didn’t do that for me personally. I’m hoping to give this series another go this year as a little pre-game before Season 2 of the Netflix show drops soon.

The Lady Tempts an Heir

goodreads summary

I absolutely loved this historical fiction series. If you’re a fan of the Bridgerton series, I highly recommend this. If you’re a fan of Bridgerton Season Two and are looking for a similar slow burn romance and elder sister protecting her younger sister kind of tropes, the first book in this series, “The Heiress Gets a Duke”, is for you. “The Lady Tempts an Heir” is the third book in this trilogy and follows the elder brother of the female mc in “The Heiress Gets a Duke.” I started this book a couple of months ago and got about ten pages in before I started to worry that it might not be for me. We dive right into the story and the female mc started to give off insta-love vibes and I personally am not a fan of that trope. I’m much more of a slow burn girl. I do think it’s unfair to judge a book in the first ten pages so I definitely need to give this book another chance.
