Hello everyone, hope you are staying safe.
Things are a bit scary now and things are changing everywhere as I’m writing this and as you’re reading it. It’s been a while since I’ve posted here and in this time of uncertainty, I’m planning to be more consistent here because it’ll give me structure and purpose.
I consider myself to be a very creative person. I may not be the most aesthetic (I most definitely am not) but a lot of my passions and hobbies lie in the art of creating. I’m hoping that as I say goodbye to the multitude of doors closing in my life such as:
I can try to keep at least one door cracked open to preserve a remnant of my self-identity that’s been rubbed raw. I’m hoping for that door to be my presence on this blog where I talk about books, life, and my studies.
I’m currently in one of my worst reading slumps. I always find myself in one when I’m back at my family home and I feel like this slump is going to be even bigger if I don’t manage it right away. The lack of schedule and the panic and fear running the world dry is definitely adding to it.
Even in a massive slump, I’m somehow in the middle of five books. I have either started them or am participating in buddy reads so I need to get started on them.
I started this one this past weekend as I wanted to complete it for the Queer Lit Readathon. I had planned to read this book and “Radio Silence” by Alice Oseman but I couldn’t finish either of them. I’m currently about 40 pages into “Of Fire and Stars”. I’m intrigued by the premise but the writing hasn’t pulled me in or anything quite yet. I feel like that the writing so far has only done a lot of telling rather than showing. I haven’t gotten to the meat of the story yet so I’m still interested to see what happens.
As mentioned above, this was my other pick for the Queer Lit Readathon which I didn’t end up starting. This would have been a reread for me. “Radio Silence” is one of my favorite books and I want to do my reread of it justice because I’d love to binge it really fast, love it, and cry about it all over again and feel safe and happy. While there are cute parts in this book that make me want to squeal, I do also feel that this book is especially emotionally draining for me. So I think that has been putting me off from starting this book.
I’m also sixty pages into this book and the only reason that I haven’t picked this book up is because I kept getting distracted with other books. Also, I tend to pick this book up at night and the plot in this book has a very creepy undertone. All I want to read is about Gansey and Jane but the Gray Man keeps coming up and being all creepy. I love horror movies or anything creepy but I live next to a tree nursery and every night it gets a bit windy and I hear howling noises outside. In conclusion, love the book, love the characters, love the writing, but I’m a mushy marshmallow weakling who’s scared of moving tree branches.
I’m supposed to buddy read this with my friend and I haven’t picked it up yet, at all. I don’t know much about it but the general premise and I kind of want to keep it that way.
I’ve been listening to the audiobook for a few days now because it’s incredibly short. It’s only five hours long and I started it on my drive up to pick up stuff from my apartment at my uni before they shut down the city. I’ve got an hour left of it and I’m dreading the end. For those of you who don’t know, this book is an autobiography/memoir written by a neurosurgeon who finds out he has cancer. It’s an exploration on what the meaning and purpose of life is and the writing is beautiful. Paul always had a love for reading and writing and his love of words and his talent really shows in each and every sentence of this book.
In conclusion, I’m in a book/life/creative slump but I’m trying to fix myself. I’m going to try to listen to more audiobooks on my evening walks, I’m going to try to be more consistent here, and I’m going to try to schedule in reading books. I clearly have a lot of books on my list to read but I’m probably going to end up picking up some fluffy, more light hearted reads and favorites to get me going.
How has your reading been going? Are you reading more or less now that you’re spending all night and day at home?
I’m definitely reading less (and in a bit of a slump) and I’m also in the middle of 3 books I’m not that excited about. I enjoy them during those rare moments when I can actually sit down and pick them up again but that is the most difficult part. I’m just not that excited about them. I’ve listening to audiobooks more though, I find them really helpful because I can keep doing other stuff while listening. Good luck with your slump!
Thank you! I need to listen to more audiobooks, drop me some recommendations please lolol. I recently listened to the first Harry Potter book on audiobook and absolutely loved the experience.
I’m very picky with my audiobooks, but I’ve really enjoyed middle-grade books on audio, the narrators usually do a good job and it’s easier for me to pay attention to these for some reason. Like Victoria Schwab’s City of Ghosts & Tunnel of Bones; and the Wings of Fire series is all on Scribd you can use their free 30 days which is what I did.
I don’t subscribe to any online service though so I’ve listened to only like 8 audiobooks total in my life and don’t have that many recommendations actually /:
SLUMPS SUCK YEESH!!! usually when i’m in a slump i pick up a books that has a different and interesting format, one i’m not used to reading on the daily. it really helps bring back my excitement. so, read some comics or graphic novels…. or read a book that’s super short so you can feel like you are reading something.
anyway, i’m sorry about university 😞 i hope things look up for you, even if it’s just a little bit. love ya! take care of yourself!
