Summer Romance TBR

Summer is here, summer is here, summer is here! I have a love hate relationship with the summer lol. Where I live, summers are excruciatingly hot which means walking around in puddles of sweat and bugs flying everywhere and sometimes, even flying onto you. Then, there’s the matter of the ever present sun. It’s just tiresome having to wake up to and going to sleep to sunlight lol. I’m someone who needs a little bit of darkness to remain sane. The one thing I do look forward to in summers are all the romance releases. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a romance reader all year round but I feel like the big new romance releases always come out as soon as June comes.

I thought that I’d share some of the new 2021 summer romance releases that have come out recently that I want to get to in the coming months. A little disclaimer before you go further into this post: when I buy or even add books to my tentative TBR’s, most of the times, I don’t know much about the plot other than one or two details that really stuck out to me. I like to go into books mostly blind knowing only one or two tropes so apologies ahead of time if you find that this post is a bit too vague.

The Ex Talk – Rachel Lynn Solomon

This book sounds like so much fun. As someone who’s recently gotten back into podcasts, I’m really excited to see how the plot is going to center around one. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t know much about this book other than the fact that it’s centered around our two mc’s hosting a podcast together. I also believe that they’re either exes or they trash talk their exes on this podcast? Either way, I think that it’s an amazing set up for a great romance. Can you imagine an enemies to lovers romance centered around a podcast??? Or a romance that features two people who hate each other being forced to do a podcast??? If this isn’t what this book’s about, I really want one with that trope lol.

Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book.

One Last Stop – Casey McQuiston

This was an auto-preorder for me simply because it’s a Casey McQuiston new release. “Red White and Royal Blue” was one of my all time favorite books when it came out a couple of years ago. In fact, it’s still such a big comfort read for me. Everything from the romance to the friendships and family dynamics in RWRB was so well done and precious that I knew that Casey McQuiston was an author to keep on my radar. I heard that this book is centered around time travel and a subway crush and that’s all I need to know. I’m really excited to see how time travel is going to play into this story considering Casey’s debut was a true contemporary.

For cynical twenty-three-year-old August, moving to New York City is supposed to prove her right: that things like magic and cinematic love stories don’t exist, and the only smart way to go through life is alone.

“Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. “

The Ex Talk – Rachel Lynn Solomon

This book’s blurbed by Jodi Picoult and I’ve only read two books by Jodi but there’s something about her that I find inspiring. Last summer, I fell into the hole of watching author interviews on YouTube and I honestly loved hearing her talk about writing. So when Jodi says that this book is a perfect gateway, I’m going to believe Jodi.

I know that Emily Henry is a huge writer, especially when it comes to romances that explore heavy topics. In fact, I recently found out that some of her top reads includes “Evvie Drake Starts Over” by Linda Holmes which is exactly what I assume her romance is like, soft and romantic yet emotionally heavy. Her last year’s release “Beach Read” was such a big hit that when I found out she was coming out with another one this summer, I immediately added it to my tbr and proceeded to buy it, knowing absolutely nothing about it. With the other books, on this list, I had an inkling on what to expect but this one, I genuinely didn’t know anything.

So when I read the back summary, I was hooked, especially by this line lol, “Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothin in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis.” I was sold at khakis. From the back, it looks like we’re following two mc’s who are polar opposites yet close friends who eventually have a falling out. I’m curious to see what’s happened and how things play out. I personally love reading about romances where we have two people who care deeply about each other while being the compete opposites, it just screams wholesomeness.
