The Avengers Journey: Captain America

This was the most perfect origin story for a cinematic universe and especially for a character like Steve Rodgers. For those who don’t know, this movie follows the journey of one man, Steve Rodgers, who’s determined to serve his country and fight in the war against the Nazis. All through his life, he’s had to fight his way through doors that were closed to him because of his appearance and enlisting happens to be another door that he’s not willing to give up on opening.

When his good friend Bucky finally gets enlisted and is about to be sent off, Steve does what he does best and tries to enlist once again. And from there, we get to follow Steve Rodgers as he learns a lot more about the war that’s happening and about people on both sides of the war who are fighting to use technology and intelligence for quite the opposite reasons.

As a movie on its own, outside of the Marvel universe, I think that it did a really good job in projecting that 1940’s “American” war time vibe. Everything from the sets to the accents and costumes gave off the perfect period film touch to the movie. It wasn’t much of a deep dive into the historical time period or anything like that but all the historical elements present in the movie were done simply and effectively.

This movie did everything I wanted from Captain Marvel. It set up the plot threads that are meant to be continued later on in the Marvel Universe, it established who our main character is, whether it be their personality, motives, ambitions, or their general background. This movie had it all.

The one thing I wish we could have got more from is the side characters. I know that they were left in the background for a reason but seeing Peggy and Howard Stark working away in the background and both, unknowingly, simultaneously changing the future, left me wanting more one on one time from them. We got to see the brief introduction of Howard and Captain America’s relationship but I wish we got more from it. And I wish we got more, a lot more, of Peggy.

Peggy was one of the best parts of this movie. In terms of the best, bad ass, female characters in the Marvel universe, Peggy stands firmly on top of that list. I love how she demands her presence without coming off cringe and how genuine and real her character felt in the small amount of screen time she got.

The balance between setting up the universe as well as making sure to focus on Steve’s journey as Captain America was done perfectly.

The movie did a good job building the character of Steve Rodgers as someone who’s relentless and is willing to fight for what’s right and dealing justice with compassion as he was instructed by the man who gave him his origin story. In a way, this movie had two origin stories. The first origin story was done out of desperation, to persevere and fight for honor and safety of the general public, and the second origin was from the ultimate sacrifice that resulted in him becoming a true avenger, a true hero who can and is willing to fight through time and generations for the good.

I hope you enjoyed this quick little post about my thoughts on the movie “Captain America”! Who’s your favorite? Captain Marvel or Captain America?
