Weekly Wrap Up #10

September 19th to September 25th: Kind Words, Surprise Hurricanes, and Car Trouble

Wow this week was a doozy. It was a perfectly chaotic blend of highs and lows. I had a somewhat decent start to the week and spent the days waiting for my little trip down south where I’d spend a couple of days back home with my family. Half way through the week, I learned that there’s a potential hurricane brewing in the Atlantic which of course now, we all know that Hurricane Ian is very much so a thing. In true Florida fashion, the storm path was and honestly, still is, extremely unpredictable and my Friday night was spent at a store full of panic buyers. I saw this guy take a whole stack of water trays for himself and left barely any for others. The line was crazy and wrapped around the whole entire store. My drive down was horrible. It was so sunny and so incredibly hot and my AC decided to stop working. My face was so red and my clothes were soaked from sweating. It was not a fun drive lol. So besides dealing with hurricane prep, I also had to deal with getting my car fixed.

It was definitely an eventful week.

Here are some highs from the past few days:

What I Read

The Butcher and the Wren by Alaina

goodreads summary

I’m a huge fan of the podcast Morbid so I was more than ready to check out Alaina’s debut into literature. I am not a big thriller or mystery novel reader so I was curious to see what my reading experience with this book would be. It’s safe to say that I enjoyed this book. It did read like a debut book but it’s one with a premise I found really interesting. I especially liked the ending of this book and am curious to see what Alaina will bring out in the future. I thought the strongest and most interesting parts of this book were the bits about the forensics, especially around analyzing the bodies through an ME’s perspective. Alaina herself has a career in forensics which was clearly evident as the book offered a more scientific perspective to crime scenes than the ones that are dramatized in crime TV series.

Vengeful by V.E Schwab

goodreads summary

This book was a work of art. I really can’t wait to reread this book and analyze it. I loved the metaphors, the themes, the writing, and even the structure of this book. This book was significantly different in tone when compared with the first book. The first book was action packed and while a ton happened in this book as well, it was more of a slow burn. It was darker and it was more rife with tension and intricate plot lines that of course, exploded at the end of the book. I’m really glad to have learned that there’s going to be a third book in the series because I want more from this world.

What I Watched

Ice Age: Scrat Tales

This was such a cute film series. I think this show had six episodes, each ten minutes or so long and they were so adorable and light hearted. I really sleep on Disney Plus because this show was such a well needed pick me up. I watched this with my dad one night and it had us both laughing out loud.

Last Breath

This was such an interesting documentary about deep sea saturation divers. I’m not going to lie, I did feel a bit frustrated with the editing of this movie because I felt like it took the narration so long for us to finally understand what saturation divers are what they do for their job. It might have just been me and I missed hearing the explanation or something. Other than that, this is a survival story of one diver who got trapped under sea in a freak accident and the crew who tried to save him. There’s a ton of real life footage inserted and I also liked how they reenacted some of the stuff.

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers & Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

I finally finished this trilogy and wow oh wow I truly enjoyed it. I’m planning to make a whole separate post for this movie series so I’ll keep things brief here and say that by the end of “The Return of the King”, I really wanted Sam to push Frodo into a burning vat of fire. I was so done with him.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

I’m only one episode into this and all I have to say is my oh my is it creepy. I forgot what Dahmer did and that first episode was eye opening. It was extra creepy because the entire episode had no background music. It was just quiet horror and breathing noises as predator and prey circled each other in a one bed room apartment full of unimaginable horrors.
