Happy Monday!

This week’s going to be a busy week as I’m going on a cruise this coming Sunday. You’d think it’d be a nice relaxing event but I think my mom’s going to implode from stress and take my entire family down with her 😉

When I’m home alone and not shopping or packing, I’m trying to give myself some time to read. I’ve just finished Escaping From Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco and I’m not sure how I feel about it to be honest. I’m still gathering my thoughts and am going to draft a review soon.

Last night I ended up picking up The Dry by Jane Harper and it’s my first adult thriller in a long time. I think I read two John Grisham books few years back but I don’t remember much from it. But this book, oh my gosh.

I’m only three chapters into this book and am already loving Jane Harper’s writing. The way she started this novel is bone chilling. While I haven’t read a lot of thrillers, I’ve definitely seen my fair share of thriller movies because that’s all my mother loves to watch. Never have I before encountered an opening into a thriller the way Jane Harper constructed in the first two pages of this book.

Jane Harper opened with death and heat, both of which made your mouth go dry at the raw desperation of the people for a single drop of rain and your heart stutter at the darkness left behind in the relentless heat.

One thing that makes a book powerful is the first line and Jane Harper’s first line didn’t hold back on what she’s planning to deliver in this novel.

“It wasn’t as though the farm hadn’t seen death before, and the blowflies didn’t discriminate. To them there was little difference between a carcass and a corpse.”

I also love how this book feels! The pages are thin, the font is thin, and the book under the cover is a beautiful gray. Three chapters into the book, I can already tell how symbolic the cover is and it’s one of my favorite book covers on my shelf as of now. I love how simple it is yet how dark it is at the same time. I always think it’s amazing how the way one captures the nigh sky can either make it look magical or terrifying.

Overall, I’m excited to continue reading this book. I’m planning to pick up a quick read to read alongside this as it’s quite dark.
