2021 Anticipated Reads

A new year means a new ambitious list of books I want to get to this year! I’m not going to lie, I’m not one to be actively following new releases or upcoming releases. I think it’s so cool if you do and honestly, I applaud you for having the energy to do that lol. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time for that right now and I don’t really follow booktube and haven’t been on goodreads very much the previous year so I’m mainly settled on stalking bookstagram to find new books.

So this compilation is mainly books I’ve randomly found after reacquainting myself with goodreads and books I’ve heard on bookstagram.

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind – Yuval Noah Harari

After last November, I discovered that there’s a strong possibility I’ve discovered a new favorite genre, non-fiction. This book is always talked about in any YouTube video discussing the top non-fiction must reads so it makes sense that it has found its way onto my to read list. I also am excited for this book because of the historical aspect to it. I’m a huge history nerd and find it amazing to look back at history and see how cyclical things are and also how far we’ve come from and well… how far we’re still behind.

The Office of Historical Corrections: A Novella and Stories – Danielle Evans

This is another addition to the historical books I want to get to this year. I remember reading a quote from a book that was so powerful. Unfortunately, I don’t remember it verbatim but it went along the lines of how history is noted down by man and there’s no one as biased as a man. What we know is what was recorded and what was recorded is based on the biases and political agenda of some other individual who was alive at that time. That person had to decide what was worthy to be passed on generation to generation and preserved as historical facts. I’m kind of excited and equally terrified to see how much I’ve been taught is a lie.

The First Sister – Linden A. Lewis

This is a sci-fi fantasy book that got so much praise from a booktuber I follow. I don’t much booktube at all but I occasionally watch Riley Marie’s recommendation videos because I tend to love the book she loves. One great example of how I found a new favorite book because of her recommendation is The Bridge Kingdom. I’ve never heard of The Bridge Kingdom anywhere in the book community until I stumbled across it in her wrap up and it honestly made me fall back in love with reading. It’s one of my most favorite fantasy romance books ever. so I really trust her opinions on what’s a good sci-fi fantasy book. I’m hoping that this book will be equally as political and action packed as The Bridge Kingdom was.

The Sword of Kaigen – M.L. Wang

I’m not going to lie, this book seriously intimidates me lol. I’ve seen my friends over on bookstagram raving about this book and how tears have been shed and nothing hypes me up more than a book that makes you feel. I’m always nervous about reading big fantasy books but I’ve seen people blow through this one pretty fast so I’m hoping that means it’s going to be an action packed book that’ll leave me obsessed to the point where I can’t put it down.

Jade City – Fonda Lee

This book was on my radar A LONG time ago and just the past few months, I’ve seen it explode. I’m so excited to pick it up and give it a go. I don’t know much about this book but I feel like it’s going to be action packed. I do realize how many times I’ve said that in this post lol, sorry for that. I can’t explain it but this book just gives me Six of Crows vibes? I don’t know how to describe it other than that. I’m expecting this book to be dark and interesting and also very character driven.

The Invisible Life of Addie Larue – V.E. Schwab

Honestly, who hasn’t heard about this book lol. I’ve always admired V. E Schwab from a distance but have yet to read any of her works. I really appreciate their openness online about the author life. I find it inspiring and motivating as someone who wants to eventually write something lol. One of the reasons why I want to make this the first book I read from her works is because of the story’s production. I think the way this book came to be is a beacon of hope for all aspiring writers. This story was developed over so many years and hearing the author talk about how it blossomed into this now critically acclaimed piece of work from an inkling of a plot is magical.

The House in the Cerulean Sea – T.J. Klune

This was the summer book of everyone’s dreams. The plot screams wholesomeness and I cannot wait for that. I feel like the new popular book trope is a community of children who are a bit different from the “norm” living together as a found family. I haven’t read many books with this trope and I’m excited to dive into it with this novel. I love how this story follows an older character, I love how “dangerous” these children are. My interests are peaked. I’m excited to dive into a unique world and cry all the wholesome tears.

Lore – Alexandra Bracken

I heard the concept of this book involved mythology and Medusa. I heard about it a long time ago on the author’s instagram stories and I was so excited from what they were saying that I preordered it. Now, few days before the release, I don’t remember much about the book but I know that I’m super excited to be picking it up. I’m hoping that this book will give me the mythology vibes I was expecting from Roshani Chokshi’s The Gilded Wolves series.

These are only some of the books I’m looking forward to picking up because my other anticipated reads are going to remain a little bit of a secret for secret upcoming posts 😉

I don’t follow new releases, either, but it’s nice that so many other readers do and post about them. I’m looking forward to The House in the Cerulean Sea this year, too. It seems to have been on everyone’s list and I have yet to head anything bad about it.
