Group Read: The Lion’s Lady by Julie Garwood

The Lion’s Lady

goodreads summary

Christina Bennett had taken London society by storm. The ravishing beauty guarded the secret of her mysterious past until the night Lyon, Marquis of Lyonwood, stole a searching, sensuous kiss. An arrogant nobleman with a pirate’s passions, he tasted the wild fire smoldering beneath Christina’s cool charm and swore he would possess her…

But the feisty and defiant Christina would not be so easily conquered. Mistress of her heart and of her fortune, she resisted Lyon’s sensuous caresses. She dared not surrender to his love…for then, she must also forsake her precious secret…and her promised destiny!

This is the readathon’s group pick and I’m so, so excited for it. I read my first Julie Garwood, “The Secret”, a month or two ago and I absolutely loved it. I don’t read much highlander romance and I loved how the author took us into the historical aspects of the time period. In “The Secret”, we got to learn a lot about how childbirth was back then and how women were treated during and after the process. The writing, the way the couple came together, was so nicely drawn out. I can’t wait to see what this book has in store.

Lord of Lies

goodreads summary

Portia Chadwick knows she’ll never have a life of adventure. But when a dangerous moneylender kidnaps her sister, Portia seeks help from a man known only as Nightshade. Soon she finds herself charging headfirst into his world of intrigue and danger―and unexpected passion.

Dell Turner grew up in London’s back alleys and gin lanes. Vowing to escape his low beginnings, he hires himself out to society’s elite. When he accepts a job from a beautiful young lady, he doesn’t anticipate her relentless determination to join his mad occupation…or her unnerving ability to inspire emotions he thought long buried. She’s as dangerous to him as his world is to her, and yet Dell can’t bring himself to turn Portia away… even if it means risking her life.

This was a recommendation from someone in a thrift store and I’ve got to say I’m pretty excited. I like myself some action and I have a feeling that a book that starts off with kidnapping and making acquaintances with someone named Nightshade, action is pretty much guaranteed.

My Darling Duke

goodreads summary

Miss Katherine Danvers is a desperate wallflower. Her family is on the brink of financial ruin, and it is up her to save her mother and sisters from a life of indignities. So she transforms herself into the incomparable Kitty Danvers, the fiancée of the enigmatic and reclusive Alexander Masters, Duke of Thornton—once dubbed the mad, bad, and dangerous catch of the Season.

Ten years ago, society and the woman Alexander Masters loved called him a monster, after a tragic accident left him scarred and confined to a wheelchair. His heart exists in cold, lonely exile, until he learns he has a fiancée—a deceptive, clever, and utterly intriguing woman he’s never met. Miss Danvers will now learn the consequences of engaging herself to the beast, for Alexander is determined to make her his. Soon, they are involved in a chase, a clash of wills, and though he once vowed to never love again, he burns for the enchanting Miss Danvers. And denying his heart may cost him an exquisite love that happens only once in a lifetime.

This has been on my TBR for a very, very long time. The whole premise of this book just has me giddy to pick it up and every month, it’s been inching higher and higher up my TBR. This book follows a wallflower who decides to save her family by announcing that she’s engaged to a reclusive Duke who is pretty hell bent on making her fake announcement come to fruition. I think that it’s such a brilliant set up to a whirlwind romance and a multitude of awkward situations.

The Lady Tempts an Heir

goodreads summary

Tall, dark, and brooding—to say that American Maxwell Crenshaw stood out in the glittering ballrooms of London, is an understatement. He vowed never to set foot in England again, but when a summons from his father, along with an ultimatum to secure his legacy, has him crossing the Atlantic for the last time, reuniting him with the delectable Lady Helena March, he can’t deny the temptation she presents. Or the ideas she inspires…

Lady Helena March is flirting with scandal. Instead of spending her time at teas and balls in search of another husband, as is expected of a young widow, Helena pours her energy into The London Home for Young Women. But Society gives no quarter to unmarried radicals who associate with illegitimate children and fallen women, and Helena’s funding is almost run out. So when the sinfully seductive Crenshaw heir suggests a fake engagement to save them both—him from an unwanted marriage and her from scorn and financial ruin—Helena finds herself too fascinated to refuse the sexy American.

As their arrangement of convenience melts oh so deliciously into nights of passion, their deception starts to become real. But if Max knew the true reason Helena can never remarry, he wouldn’t look at her with such heat in his eyes. Or might the Crenshaw heir be willing to do whatever it takes to win the one woman he’s never been able to forget…

I’m not going to lie, I’m a bit nervous about this book. This is the third book in “The Gilded Age Heiresses” trilogy and while I loved the other two books, the beginning of this book just put me off a bit. In the second book, “The Devil and the Heiress”, I really enjoyed how the couple in the this book were introduced into the narrative. I got major enemies to lovers vibes. After reading the first chapter in this book, I felt like the attraction between the female main character and the male character happened a bit too fast. I mean, we’re only on page 10 and the female main character is talking about the male mc and how attractive he is. I personally am a fan of more slow burn romances and so I’m hoping that the more I get into this book, we’ll get more drama and tension.
