May Wrap Up

May was a tough month, especially the last two weeks. I think Mercury retrograded way too hard this time around. By the end of May, things just started piling up on top of each other and it felt like I couldn’t catch my breath. I definitely felt burnt out at the end of May and I’m still feeling the after affects of it now in June.

One cool thing I started this month is that I started uploading Weekly Wrap Up’s on my blog.

I just document recent reads, listens, watches, and books I’ve seen on the internet or in person that I’ve added to my “to be read” list. I’ve seen other people do variations of this on their blogs, youtube channels, and podcasts and I thought it would be a great thing to incorporate in my own site. I also have the worst memory so I think that it’ll be fun to look back and remember what I did each week.

I somehow managed to read a ton of books and watched a ton of great things in May so let’s move on and talk about the good stuff!

Meltdown Three Mile Island [Netflix Documentary]

This documentary was amazing. I talked about it in my weekly wrap up but if you haven’t read that, this documentary series follows a nuclear plant leak that occurred in Pennsylvania around the late 70’s. It’s edited and produced so well that it felt like I was watching a movie or an actual tv show and not a documentary. I also love how the producers/documentary makers conducted the interviews. When you see a lot of documentaries, you kind of get used to the pattern of how they’re put together: you get the exposition, background information, interviews, and more exposition. This documentary took a spin on the normal documentary structure and interviewed people who lived through the Three Mile Island nuclear plant leak without giving us much insight into who they are until the end. You’re already having your mind blown and heart shattered at the horrors these people had to endure and how much they had to sacrifice for their voices to be heard and to be considered valuable enough to be allowed to live that you aren’t really spending time trying to piece together how they’re all connected. So in the end, when everything does end up tying together, it’s super impactful.

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

goodreads summary

This is hands down the best contemporary romance book I’ve read in a while. The writing was absolutely beautiful and the story was gripping and something you can easily lose yourself in without much effort. It’s honestly a perfect escape into the past summers of our youth and the pains and joys of growing up. “Every Summer After” is a romance but it’s also a coming of age story that follows the growing relationship of these two kids and then adults that isn’t clean cut like they are in hallmark movies or other romance books. It’s a book that follows a romance alongside the multitude of relationships that you fall into and out of as you grow up. It’s messy because unfortunately, life is actually pretty messy. If you’re looking for a romance or a book to read this summer, please pick this one up.

The Maid by Nita Prose

goodreads summary

This book is honestly one of the biggest surprises I’ve had this year so far. I don’t read much thriller, mystery, or horror and the fact that this book falls in the thriller/mystery genre and that I LOVED it has inspired me to start diving into a whole new genre. I don’t want to tell you much about the plot summary other than that we follow Molly the Maid who works at a fancy hotel and that she ends up getting caught up in a crime. Molly is neurodivergent and the writing in this book conveys that so perfectly. Honestly, if you’re looking for a cozy mystery and something that isn’t too thrillerly or high stakes, this is the perfect book for you. The writing is so easy to lose yourself into and the story is wholesome and endearing but also filled with the right amount of tension to keep you flipping the pages. I’m not going to lie, there were a couple of times where I gasped out loud “excuse me what?” in shock and then cried in the next paragraph because it’s impossible to not fall in love with every thought and action that Molly thinks and does. I know, I need tissues for my issues [please if you read this book, tell me you get that reference]
